Mayor’s Briefing Report – Mayor Gail Howe reported on recent City business. A survey went out this month with the utility bills asking residents to voice their suggestions on what the old fire hall building should be used for. The most popular suggestion was for a museum, followed by expanding the library, and renting it out as a recreation/meeting hall. Run for the Border was on Saturday, with over 300 motorcycles stopping here for approximately 50 minutes.
School Briefing Report – Lois Davies reported that graduation is on June 6th. Work will begin on June 15th on the new health and safety bond issues. Elementary Spring Concert will be held tomorrow night, May 21st.
Recap: Annual Banquet – Linda Marsh updated us on the Annual Banquet, which was held on April 27th. There were not quite as many people this year, but many stayed after it was over to chat. Twenty-eight tickets were sold. Chamber Vice-President Rebecca Meadows thanked Linda for all her hard work on this event.
Recap: Business Appreciation & Safety Day – The event was held on May 2nd. Jennifer Stennes reported that it went very well and there was a pretty good, constant turnout. She said that Methow Arts were an asset to the event. From a business point of view, there were many new people from the area attending.
Upcoming Event: City-Wide Yard Sale – Linda Marsh asked that there is no permit fee, but everyone should come to City Hall to register their sales and be put on the map.
Upcoming Event: Apple Pie Jamboree – The APJ Committee meeting was held last night. The music is planned in the park. SweetRiver Bakery is making breakfast on Saturday and Sunday of the event. The seniors’ KFC dinner will be on Saturday night. On Sunday, there will be a church service in the park, followed by gospel in the park until 3:00. Volunteers are needed.
Upcoming Event: Dragon Boat Races – Joni Parks reported that they have 13 teams signed up so far, with 10 more teams in the works. She is shooting for 28 teams. There is a need for a couple more boats to patrol the course.
Guests: Julie Spedman and Roger Harnack of The Chronicle announced a special serial story, “Twist of Fate”, they will be presenting this summer to promote literacy. The Chronicle is partnering with local libraries, including the Pateros Library. The story will run one chapter per week for eight weeks starting June 24th and there will be special recognition for those who read all eight chapters.
Miscellaneous: Brenda White of Okanogan Douglas Hospital announced that Relay for Life raised almost $8,000.00 this year. Twenty-eight teams participated. The Silent Auction that was held raised $3,100.00.
